STV presents one-off documentary – The August Years of May and Gloria
The Story of a True Scottish ‘Homecoming’

On Monday 24 May, STV will air a special one-off documentary, charting a mother and daughter’s journey, as they learn to cope with the mother’s progressing Alzheimer’s disease, in The August Years of May and Gloria.

Scottish-born 82-year-old May and her daughter Gloria (59) have lived in Canada for many years. The August Years is a compassionate and intimate documentary which tells their heart-warming, humorous and often difficult story as they make the decision to move away from loved ones in Canada and back to the family they left behind in Scotland.

After the death of her father, Gloria moved in with her mother May to “look after her”. It soon becomes clear that widow and divorcee, Gloria, needs May just as much as May needs her.

Even when faced with the prospect of leaving Canada, the onset of Alzheimer’s and old age, May remains touchingly upbeat, full of life and laughter throughout the programme. Only when the reality of leaving Canada, her husband’s grave, and her beloved budgie hits May, do we see her break down. As everyone gathers to say goodbye, Gloria’s sacrifices are clearly shown as she leaves children and grand-children behind to join her sister in Edinburgh.

The August Years of May and Gloria, shows the audience there can be humour and happiness in everyone’s “august years”. Viewers will see first hand the love and respect May and Gloria have for each other, but also the resentment that can grow on both sides. By their own admission they are like “a married couple” and their tears, laughter and memories and shared in this special documentary.

It is the story of a true Scottish ‘homecoming’.

May’s daughter Gloria speaks candidly about their relationship: “If you had told me years ago I would be spending all this time with my mother, I would have said no-way, no. But we did. I was a widow and she was a widow. She needed me and I needed her.”

Elizabeth Partyka, Channel Controller for STV, said: “The August Years of May and Gloria is an absolutely compelling story and I’m thrilled that we’re showing it on STV. The vibrant personalities of these two women draw the audience in. I am sure that many of our viewers will identify with the themes and emotions that are at the heart of this documentary. Director and Producer Maureen Judge is an internationally respected programme maker and it is exciting for STV to have an international documentary of this standard premiering on STV.”

The August Years of May and Gloria is a Makin’ Movies Production for STV. It was produced and directed by Maureen Judge.

March 24, 2010. Toronto. Maureen Judge (FLicKeR, Unveiled: The Mother Daughter Relationship), the award-winning documentarian, in association with TVO, presents Mom’s Home, the final in her vérité documentary trilogy, exploring themes of love, betrayal and acceptance in parent/ (adult) child relationships. The first two instalments are Unveiled: The Mother Daughter Relationship) and In My Parents’ Basement.

Society is changing. People are living longer, but due to health trouble, death/divorce or housing costs, many parents are moving in with their adult children creating two and three generation households. With 90 per cent of all seniors in Canada still living in the community and 80 per cent of them being cared for by close relatives and friends, the documentary charts the emotional territory of a widespread trend. The recent Statistics Canada census found 450,000 grandparents living with their children.

Mom’s Home is a funny, compassionate and tension fraught one-hour documentary about aging mothers who move in with their grown daughters. We follow three pairs of mothers and daughters, May (82) and Gloria (58), Harrian (69) and Charmaine (42), and Pam (68) and Liz (41), who, despite their life experience, are still wrestling with their conflicting emotions, difficulties and sometimes ill-fated commitment to do ‘what’s best’.

“The film intimately documents the myriad of social adjustments and changing expectations that come into play when the mothers and daughters find their roles reversed and Mom becomes reliant on her adult daughters,” says Judge.

Mom’s Home premieres on Wednesday, May 5, 10 pm (ET) on TVO’s “The View From Here”, May 6, 1 am (ET), and May 9, 10:30 pm (ET).

On the Knowledge Network, it airs Monday, May 10, 10 pm (PT) and Tuesday, May 11, 11 pm (PT).

Mom’s Home is produced by Maureen Judge; with cinematography by Gemini award-winning Harald Bachman (FLicKeR, In My Parents’ Basement); editing by three-time Gemini winner Deborah Palloway (Fire and Water and Rape: A Crime of War); multi award-winning Aaron Davis as composer; the commissioning editor, TVO is Jane Jankovic.

Mom’s Home is produced by Makin Movies in association with TVO, Knowledge Network, SCN, Rogers Documentary Fund, The Canadian Television Fund, The Canadian Film or Video Tax Credit, and The Ontario Film & Television Tax Credit.

Makin’ Movies Presents In Association with TVO, Knowledge Network and SCN – Mom’s Home

Produced and Directed by Maureen Judge

Mom’s Home is an intimate, compassionate and humorous documentary about aging mothers who move in with their adult daughters. The vérité film follows three pairs of mothers and daughters, who, despite their life experience, are still wrestling with their conflicting emotions, difficulties and sometimes ill-fated commitment to do ‘what’s best’. The film captures the myriad of social adjustments and changing expectations that come into play when the mothers and daughters find their roles reversed and Mom is now reliant on her ‘child’.

May (82) and Gloria (58): These two feisty Scottish lassies decided to move in together for the long haul after May’s husband passed away. They live in a little house on a hill in a small Southern Ontario town , they don’t have much money and Gloria works three days a week as a cook to support them. With May in the very early stages of Alzheimer’s, the pair navigates through life as if they are on an extended vacation, not knowing where it may lead. But as each day becomes more of a struggle, Gloria decides to uproot them and take her mother home to Scotland.

Harrian (69) and Charmaine (42): Harrian is in the process of moving into her youngest daughter, Charmaine’s house. Harrian was living with her son for fifteen years, but he didn’t want her there anymore and, in an effort to push her out, made her life unbearable. Realizing her Mom was both hurt and bewildered, single-Mom Charmaine stepped in with emotional support and persuaded Harrian to come and live with her and her two teenage daughters. Harrian is not sure how long she’ll last.

Pam (68) and Liz (41): Pam moved in with Liz when Liz and her husband needed financial help buying their first house. Six months later, Liz and her husband separated, sold the house and divorced. So Pam remained with her and the children. After living with Liz for 11 years, Pam would like her freedom back…before she’s 70. And, in the next couple of years, Liz intends to build a house and marry her boyfriend. Moving apart to go in separate directions is, ironically, a shared dream Pam and Liz are desperately holding onto. They both feel they’re missing out on living and yet can’t seem to dig their way out of their current lives.

Mom’s Home is an entertaining and provocative film and captures the hearts and minds of viewers who are in the process of coming to terms with their aging mothers. And their children will be drawn to watching the recognizable family dramas as the film cuts through the mire of the mother/daughter bond.

Director’s Statement – Maureen Judge

The August Years of May and Gloria and Mom’s Home were born out of my passionate interest in the impact family relationships have on our lives. The August Years of May and Gloria/Mom’s Home is the third film in a vérité, character-driven documentary trilogy on love, betrayal and acceptance in parent/adult child relationships. It began with Unveiled: The Mother Daughter Relationship, a film about the dynamic bond between mothers and their young adult daughters, filmed while they are in the throes of planning weddings; and was followed by In My Parents’ Basement, a raw, intimate exploration on adult children returning home to live.

With The August Years of May and Gloria and Mom’s Home I turned the lens on an aging mother and daughter who move in together, as much out of necessity as choice. The story is dramatic and resonant, and portray a relationship that echoes the pain of loneliness, aging and the difficult financial circumstances experienced by many single, widowed and divorced women who make up a large percentage of our aging population.

And, to add insult to injury, the older women’s role as mother has been flipped on its head and she finds herself dependent on her daughter. Meanwhile, the next generation is not getting any younger. The daughter’s health is failing she can’t earn enough to look after the two of them. She’s overcome by anxiety and guilt over what to do next. And yet, in spite of it all, their lives are made bearable by the joy, humour and love the pair shares with us in their journey through middle and later life.
