Makin’ Movies Inc. is a Toronto based film and television production company with producer/director Maureen Judge at its helm. We produce provocative, award-winning cross platform documentaries and television series. The documentary work ranges from intimate, character-driven stories centered on the family dynamic, to portraits of performance poets, to the Beat subculture and its lasting impression on rock music and the arts. A sense of purpose and a sense of humour are the hallmarks of our productions.
Makin’ Movies’ most recent project, Mom’s Home, is a documentary about aging mothers moving in with their middle-age daughters and was nominated for two Gemini Awards by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television, the Donald Brittain Award for Best Social Political Documentary and the Best Editing in a Documentary. It was commissioned by TVO and Knowledge Network and a portrait film version, entitled The August Years of May and Gloria was acquired by Scotland’s STV.
Makin’ Movies in a co-production with the NFB produced the film FLicKeR, the story of an artist who invented a drug-free way to achieve altered states of mind — through dancing pulses of light. The documentary won The Special Jury Prize for Best Canadian Feature Documentary at the Hot Docs Film Festival, Best International Art Film, Era New Horizons Festival, Poland and was honored by the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television with a 2009 Gemini Nomination for Best Arts Documentary. FLicKeR has been screened at festivals around the world, had a cross Canada Theatrical Release and aired on Bravo! 2009.
Under Maureen’s direction the company produced the highly acclaimed vérité documentary trilogy on love, betrayal and acceptance in parent and adult child relationships: the Genie Award-winning Unveiled: The Mother Daughter Relationship; In My Parents’ Basement; and the most recent, Mom’s Home.
The company’s series for television include: Family Secrets, the Silver Remi award-winning documentary series commissioned by W Network and sold internationally to Sweden, Hungry, Hong Kong and Israel; and Heart of a Poet (I&II), a documentary/performance Canadian poetry series, commissioned by Bravo! (Canada), Book Television, Access and clt.
Makin’ Movies is currently developing several projects including a cross platform documentary Edges of Love, which was awarded Shaw-Hot Docs Development Funds and Waiting, a cross platform documentary in association with TVO.
